On July 30, the General Services Administration (GSA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) joins its fellow oversight agencies in celebrating National Whistleblower Appreciation Day. Today serves as a reminder of the important role whistleblowers play in helping expose fraud, waste, and abuse.
National Whistleblower Appreciation Day commemorates a 1778 resolution by the Second Continental Congress affirming it is the duty of every citizen to report misconduct in public service. Almost 250 years later, this principle remains vital to integrity in public service.
Whistleblowers and GSA OIG’s mission
Whistleblowers help OIGs carry out their mission to fight fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct when they report suspected wrongdoing. As a result of whistleblowers sharing concerns about potential wrongdoing, the GSA OIG has uncovered:
- a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving compromised federal contracts intended to support military readiness;
- a bribery scheme involving a GSA official and construction contracts; and
- an untimely response to water contamination at a federal building that placed building occupants at risk of exposure to potentially harmful levels of lead, copper, and Legionella bacteria.
In addition, whistleblowers helped GSA OIG recover more than $60 million in False Claims Act cases during Fiscal Year 2024.
How to report
If you are aware of fraud, waste, abuse, or other misconduct in GSA programs or operations, including contracts, you should contact the GSA OIG hotline.
